How many times have you passed this and considered it just another wall?
Located in the area of Sunlight Village, between East Street and Collins Avenue, it is known as Collins Wall, and there is a history behind it.
It is widely speculated that the 10 ft wall, which bordered the property of Ralph Collins, was erected to segregate the blacks and whites. However, it is also reported that Mr. Collins had the wall built around the sides and back of his property in the 1930s and planted a citrus farm. He reportedly paid men one shilling a day and gave them a midday meal to work on the farm. This was considered quite generous, particularly in a time following a recession.
